Is this a bad idea?

Okay peeps, I am trying to figure out my summer schedule. I am signed up already for the Berlin Marathon. And I signed myself up for the Seahawks 12k in April to get my ass running more than 3 or 4 miles at a time.

Here is my current question (and I'm sure I'll have more):

1. Do you think it is a bad idea to sign up for a sprint triathlon (500m/12.4 mi/5k) the weekend before my marathon?

ETA: I already have another question:

2. Would it be a bad idea to sign up for an Oly Tri the weekend after I have a 100 mile ride on my STP training calendar?

ETA AGAIN: One more:

3. What about signing up for a sprint tri (1/2 mi/18 min/3.2 mi) the weekend after I have a 20 mile run on my marathon training calendar?

hi!! if you want to do as well as you can in your marathon i wouldn't do the sprint beforehand. if you just want to DO both races, that's probably totally fine.

as for the other races, same thing. you may not be fresh for the oly, but if you want to go and it, it could still be fun.

1. yes
2. yes
3. forget it

Questions for you:

1. Didn't you already know the answer to these questions?

2. Didn't we all know they are strictly rhetorical?

3. Isn't is obvious that (like every good runner) you are going to go right ahead and do them anyway?

If you have any intent to run the marathon well, then I wouldn't mix any of the tri stuff in. It will take away the focus from your run training. So - no to 1 and 3 for sure. As for 2, if the Oly isn't during the marathon training, then its fine. Otherwise, I wouldn't risk it.

No idea. I'm running a 10K the week before my marathon and I'm still a bit nervous about that. But I'm a worry wart, so it's difficult to tell if the worry is justified.

I'd love to run Berlin with you, but I'm thinking more and more that a fall marathon just won't happen for me. Stupid dissertation. :(

Thanks everyone!

I already knew the answers to these questions, but I think I needed outside people to tell me "that's kinda dumb!"

Okay, time for more race searching to see if I can't put all this bike training to use without spoiling my marathon!

In my opinion 3 bad ideas! I ran the Berlin half, a wonderful experience, well organized with many shows during the path. You will enjoy the race.
