The ups and downs

The last couple of weeks have been quite the rollercoaster in terms of mood. I was pretty down that I was injured, then up when I saw the doc and the prospect of knowing what was wrong loomed. Once I found out, I was very happy for a day knowing it was fixable, then down because I realize it'll potentially be April before I can begin to run again. Then I was back up for a while when Danielle and a few other people suggested I try swimming. I did, and I was cautiously optimistic when my knee didn't hurt and I didn't drown. I'd probably be really good at swimming if I didn't need to breathe, but I have to work on that. Today, though, I tried to ride the exercise bike in the gym for the first time in a few weeks, and after 5 minutes, my knee was really hurting, so again, the instant mood drop. I'm seriously bipolar right now. I'm sure I'm a joy to be around...

We get a few new additions to our masters swim club every year due to running injuries. We run a skills and drills session one night a week that I often coach. One of our new members last fall came due to a pelvic stress fracture, and really couldn't put her face in the water. Now she isn't happy unless she gets 2,000 metres in per practice!

So beware, we may get you to come over to the pool side yet, Joe!

Awww...I'm sorry Joe! When I had a stress fracture, I tried to focus on other cardio...spin class turned out to be my best friend. I also tried my hand at swimming and found the breathing part to be hard for me. Running and swimming have totally different breathing patterns. I'm sure you'll get the hang of it and become an Olympic swimmer in no time!!

Ok...I'm very confused. I thought "Back Off Man, I'm A Scientist" was Danielle. Who is Joe? And who is the injured person?? Or are you Danielle AND Joe?? That would make you a little bit more than bi-polar, but I'd still be your friend.

I can't breathe and swimm at the same time either.

It would have to take something like you being bipolar to have you finally sign up on Facebook :-)

I guess you have nothing better to do these days than to FB stalk people anyway :-)

Oh yeah and swim! Just don't be like me and turn into a swallower.

Bi-curious white bears; advice on swallowing; references to "riding the bike" (which has a slightly different meaning in the Lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgendered polar bear community) ...

Geez, no wonder anonymous pornographers are offering to sponsor your site.

Get better, Joe. Take the money. But get better.

wendy: i'm continuing with the swimming, esp b/c i have about 6 weeks until surgery and i can't apparently do anything else. i keep reminding myself how much running sucked for the first month or so. i'll keep at it, and with any luck, i won't start to hurt while swimming, and i'll finally have it figured out right before i go under the knife.

april: i wish i could continue to bike. i think it would help my mood immensely if i could do something familiar. my new plan, for lack of anything else to do, is swim enough that it becomes "familiar."

kim: well, D and i are, in fact, multiple personalities. for convenience, though, we inhabit different bodies most of the time...

LOL...Danielle (wink, wink) cleared it up for me. I love allll your personalities, even the bipolar, bi-sexual ones. I'm gonna call you "Jo-elle)...LOL
